A phrase that we hear about 10x a day and one of the phrases that is meant to encourage us. The truth is, that for some of us, it is much, much easier said than done.

There’s this self-loathing and doubt that has resided in our minds for as long as we can remember, controlling every thought we’ve ever had about ourselves. You get a compliment and automatically think, “They’re just making fun of me” or “They’re just following social graces and don’t really mean it”. When we vocalize these thoughts, we’re seen as attention-seeking or told to ‘get over it’,  but sometimes it feels like we just can’t. There’s this black plague in our mind muffling any utterance of self-love and making us overly critical of every action that we take.

Fortunately, it is possible to leave behind that little rain cloud that may be looming over your head as you read this. Learning to love yourself will not happen over night, but it’s a process that takes time, commitment and hard work.

Here are some tips for your journey to self-love:

  • If you feel that you may be dealing with depression or any other mental illness, please make an appointment with a professional. There is nothing to be ashamed of.
  • Make a list of the things that you like about yourself. Read it every morning and don’t be afraid to add onto it.
  • Self-affirmation may seem like a silly idea right now, but trust me, it works wonders.
  • Leave yourself little love notes tucked around your living space. Seek one out anytime you’re feeling down, and read it. Write more.
  • Journal.
  • Pick up a new hobby or rediscover a lost one.
  • Do something that you’ve always wanted to do; mine involved dyeing my hair magenta.
  • Surround yourself with people that will support you and are willing to make this journey with you.
  • If you feel there are any specific aspects of your life making you unhappy, work to change those habits or situations.

I promise that these techniques work. It just takes time. You’ll wake up feeling happier, you’ll have a smile on your face, people will tell you that ‘you look different’. The way you will feel inside will change immensely and you’ll want to wake up and start your day. Granted, there will be days where negative thoughts will begin to slowly seep back into the crevices of your mind, but you will have the means and power to combat these things and recognize that they are lies and not the absolute truth like you may have thought before.

So I will say to you: stop hating yourself, tolerate yourself, be comfortable with yourself, become acquainted with yourself, dig a little deeper and get to know your true self, like yourself, and eventually love yourself.

It’s one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
